You must be able speak, listen, read and write very well in English to be eligible to practice midwifery in Manitoba. 

In order to apply for a gap training or bridging program you must have taken the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Academic Examination and achieved minimum scores of seven in each component. An IELTS test report form is valid for two years.  Applicants to the IEMBP may be exempt from testing if they meet the exemption criteria.  Please review all eligibility criteria of the program you wish to apply for.

A free English language test is available for all immigrants through funding from the Government of Manitoba. The test is called the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). It is provided by the Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre (WELARC).

Use this free resource to assess your English language skills. Contact WELARC to complete the free test. Once you contact WELARC, it may take up to 6 weeks to schedule an appointment. The language test may take up to 3 hours to complete, depending on your level of English.

After the language test, WELARC can refer you to free English language classes.
